Surrey League Four
London Irish 2nd XV 7 – 5 Cobham 2nd XV
13 April 2008
Try: White
The rain stayed away for the game against London Irish that would keep Cobham in the race for the final promotion spot from league 4 to league 3. The 2nd XV faced a big Irish team and played the first half with the slope against them. With holidays and injuries still persisting, the squad drafted in Jake Kent and Will Campbell, and welcomed back Tom White and Jack Bownes. Cobham were pinned back in their own half for a lot of the first period, defending brilliantly against the strong Irish side. One lapse of concentration at a scrum on the 22m line led to Irish breaking our midfield defence and scoring under the posts. Just before half time, Connor Wickens made a crunching tackle and in the process injured himself badly enough to leave the field.
7-0 down at half-time, the team re-grouped and came out determined to get back into the game. With the slope now with the team, Cobham camped in the Irish half. Persistent attack eventually led to Tom White crossing to score a try which was unconverted. Irish began to get unsettled and infringed a number times leading to a yellow card for one of their players for a late tackle. The ensuing penalty kick was missed. Striving to score again, the side picked up a few more injuries with Freddie Bliss, Jack Bownes and Charlie Winder all having to leave the field. The final whistle blew to end a frustrating game for the 2nds that most of them felt they should have won. Each player put everything into it and they were unfortunate not to come away with the victory.
