Powerful display from Cobham 2nds blows Dorking away on a difficult sticky pitch at “Fortress Fairmile”
A big looking Dorking pack started ponderously and the more nimble Cobham forwards gained some early possession and worked winger Jack Bownes clear after 2 minutes. Cobham’s answer to Rory Underwood sprinted clear and made the line. Not converted. Cobham were having the better of all the early encounters and after six minutes were awarded a penalty within the Dorking 22. The ball was passed to Tom Sullivan who crashed over and with Conrad Burne converting Cobham were cruising at 12-0.
Cobham increased their lead after 10 minutes when Tom Sullivan again forced a gap just inside the Cobham half and sprinted half the length of the pitch to touch down (rather slowly the spectators nervously thought!) under the posts. Cobham were now dominating everything with passing, tackling and all round play of a higher level than Dorking. Sullivan scored his third try after 20 minutes when some good passing from another penalty allowed him to cruise through the defence to make it 22-0.
It was a different story in the second half as Dorking raised their game and competed much more fiercely and Cobham just failed to hold the final scoring pass on a number of occasions. In the early stages Cobham showed their defensive mettle though and wouldn’t allow the big Dorking forwards any time to settle into their stride and be dominant. After 16 minutes Robbie Stemmons crowned a fine display by showing great determination and forced his way over the line to give Cobham a 27-0 lead. It was all Cobham now as they tried to increase their lead.
Towards the end some good work by forwards Jack Taylor and Dom Hunt led to a great sniping run by in form scrum half Ollie Rumbold who narrowly missed increasing the Cobham lead as his foot just clipped the corner flag as he touched down – sadly there was no video ref available!
Overall another great performance by all members of the seconds who played as a team and justified their high placing in the league.
After the match second row forward Rory Gold said “Despite the fact Dorking had an enormous tight head prop the pack sizes were mostly even – Cobham’s whole team was on fire though, outmatching and outplaying Dorking with some brilliant tries and some excellent runs”.
