    Cobham 2nd XV  5 – 29  Richmond 2nd XV

    3/2/2008

    Try:  Hunt

In an icy cold wind at Cobham the 2nds played top of the league Richmond. The squad included Charlie Morrison returning to action for Cobham following some injuries and new boy Joe Lidbetter.

The team, having lost their last 2 games, started out really well with the forwards showing a lot of aggression and commitment. Their reward was a move that began by Dom Hunt ripping the ball out from a maul and rampaging over the line for an unconverted try. Shortly afterwards, Richmond fought back and equalised under the posts, but also failed to convert. Both sides continued to compete hard but failed to add to the scoreline to leave the score 5-5 at half-time.

Cobham rang the changes at half-time but didn't defend as well as they had in the first half, and Richmond soon got on top of the game scoring a further 24 points to win 29-5.

The 2nds have played some very strong teams in the last 3 games and have competed well. It’s back to the training paddock for the squad to work on a few areas of the game before turning out again in March.

Flanker Fred Bliss said afterwards “A game of two halves? We certainly looked the stronger side in the first half with our dominant possession, but some slack tackling let us down in the second half, just like England I suppose*.”

    * England lost 26-19 at Twickenham to Wales the day before, the first defeat to the Welsh at Twickers for 20 years!
