GUILDFORD ROCKETS FESTIVAL 24 FEB 2008

Runners - up 

The Guildford festival got off to a bit of a late start after fairly difficult traffic and car parking conditions. 

This was a big festival with 10 sides competing in the U7’s.  We were arranged into two groups and competed on a round robin basis with points being used to determine the overall positions.

We played 5 games, winning 4 (Effingham, Dorking, Guildford, Teddington) and losing only to Reeds. 

It is a testament to the enthusiasm and attitude of our players that even when behind they played with an absolute sense of fairness and dedication. 

We came 2nd overall collecting the trophy for runners up in the cup which was well deserved.       

The speed and pace of Charlie Sidwell, Carew Harris and Elliot Rumble coupled with the excellent tagging and penetrating attacks by William Merry, Olivia Williams, Allesandro Nigrelli, Tom Palliser, Alex Davies, Conor Hubbard and Harry Disley-May was a pleasure to watch. 

One aspect that sticks out was against Teddington in a very tight match where at one point we were in defence close to our try line and I was doing my usual, screaming for a “huge defence” and “I want those tags” etc and what ensued was a display of total commitment and belief. 

Every player did his or her job getting the tags at the earliest opportunity, backing each other up, covering the flanks and never giving up.  The attack was forced backwards and eventually collapsed from where we immediately scored. 

That is the true spirit of the game and our youngsters.
