U7 MINI RUGBY REPORTS
Surrey A Festival 20 April 08
match report by Claire Richmond-Smith
We had a great day at the festival in Dorking last Sunday where there were twenty three U7 teams competing in 4 pools making it a huge event. The weather was kind and the sun came out, a total contrast from some of the other festivals Cobham has taken part in during the past few weeks. The players pulled together as a team, with some great passing, support and tagging. Of the four matches, we won two, drew one and lost one - which meant we came second in our pool to a team that we beat (Guildford).
The standard of play was particularly high which our players responded to very well. The first match against Farnham which we drew became a rather critical result towards the end of the day as it meant we were just knocked into second place in the pool. The learning point is to focus on positional play and deploying our players in positions that best suit their individual skills particularly in the early games. This will be something that we will concentrate on in U8. The win against Guildford, who eventually went on to win the pool, was particularly pleasing showing the real character and tenacity of all of our players after having lost in the previous game against London Irish. In the last game against Cranleigh we were in rampant form scoring tries from more or less anywhere on the field while putting up an excellent defense. It was a great way to finish off what was a thoroughly enjoyable day.
Match 1 Cobham 4 : Farnham 4. Tries were scored by Tom Hartley (2), Matthew Evans and James Gardner.
Match 2 Cobham 4 : London Irish 6. Tries were scored by Tom Hartley, Matthew Evans, Gwilym Bradley and Andrew McCallum.
Match 3 Cobham 5 : Guildford 4. Tries were scored by Andrew McCallum, Elliott Richmond-Smith, Matthew Evans (2) and James Gardner.
Match 4 Cobham 8 : Cranleigh 2. Tries were scored by Matthew Evans (3), Andrew McCallum, Tom Williams (2), James Gardner and Charlie Sidwell.
