Welcome to one of the largest and most exciting Mini Rugby groups in the country, sponsored by Savills.
Introduction to Cobham Rugby Mini Section
The Mini’s section of Cobham RFC is an integral part of the rugby club and makes a full contribution to the club and wider Cobham community. Our aim is introduce the game to the children in a safe and supportive environment, so that they learn, above all, to enjoy the game and play it in the right team spirit. Whilst we like to be competitive, we measure our success not in trophies won but in the number of children who return to the club season after season, eventually to progress to playing youth rugby and, hopefully, senior rugby at the club.
We currently have in excess of 500 children registered in our Mini’s section and we welcome all players, both boys and girls of all abilities, from keen novices to potential internationals. Our objective is to instil in our players confidence, determination and self-belief while developing agility, skills, fitness, teamwork and discipline both on and off the field. We aim to encourage players to perform at the best of their abilities, to be gracious in victory, magnanimous in defeat and respectful to the officials, the opposition and their teammates.
We start at Under 5 by playing with a sponge ball and teaching basic passing and support play, then introduce competitive tag rugby at Under 7. Contact is introduced in a controlled environment at Under 9 and then developed right the way through to playing a full contact game at Under 11 and Under 12. Our coaches are encouraged and supported to attend RFU sanctioned courses and we run a number of these coaching (and refereeing) courses at the club throughout the year, resulting in us being able to offer a very high level of coaching in the Mini’s section.
We work hard to ensure that all players from under U7 upwards and across the ability range have the opportunity of participating in competitive rugby including hosting home festivals and fixtures as well as attending away fixtures as guests of clubs in the surrounding area. The older age groups and parents also get the opportunity to go on tour for a long weekend, which is always a highlight of the season.
We take the protection and safety of our players very seriously with a graduated introduction and development of the game and ensure that all on-field helpers are CRB checked and suitably qualified personnel.
We have also benefited from significant development work which went into improving the playing areas of our Memorial Grounds last season, as well as the recent acquisition and development of new pitches at the Covenham Grounds. This investment in the future of our club will make a marked difference in the enjoyment of rugby for our young players, and it is a mark of the ethos of the Club that the Mini’s were the first Section of the club to benefit from the use of the new facilities.
Training for the U5 to U10 age groups is held at the club’s Memorial Grounds off Fairmile Lane in Cobham on Sunday’s from 9.30am. The U5’s finish at 10.30am, U6’s at 11.00am and all other age groups finish by 11.30am.
The U11’s and U12’s will train on the new Covenham Grounds on Sundays from 10am.
All of our players are fortunate enough to be supported by a large selection of keen and committed volunteers who form the network of qualified head coaches, coaches, managers, first aiders and helpers. Cobham has a strong family and community focused ethos, which has served our club well as we have gone from strength to strength both on and off the sporting field, and parents are very much encouraged to be involved in the life of the club and the Mini’s Section in particular. At times the focus does shift from the younger members to the not so young and we have a social calendar that takes in many different activities with the highlight being the summer ball.
We proudly bear the Savills logo and are hugely indebted to Savills for all they do to help us develop our young Cobham players.
