Cobham RFC is working hard to develop a growing section of Club Referees. We are committed to raising and maintaining standards of refereeing to enhance both the enjoyment and safety of rugby at all levels for our young people; in particular to increase the number of trained referees for a club of our size and stature ~ No ref = no match!
We highly value those who are prepared to give their time to refereeing and offer in-house support and provide Referee Development Evenings run by the RFU.
The demand for referees is immense. Our ever growing Youth section now has 10 squads in 6 age groups (U.13 – U.18) hosting many matches each season ~ upwards of 60 this season alone. The Youth Section also hosts a very popular 10’s Tournament every April; this year The Oman Tourism 10’s Tournament is on Sunday 28th April.
In addition, the Mini section of Cobham RFC holds three Mini Festivals (U.7-U.12) plus the prestigious U.12 inter-county competition, The Braemar Cup. We need to provide qualified referees for all these events throughout the season. The Minis also host guest clubs on a regular basis for which referees are essential.
The London Society of Rugby Football Union Referees (LSRFUR) provide referees for all Senior matches and our U.17 & U.18 age groups. However, we have the responsibility of providing the rest!
If you are interested in becoming a referee, helping out either in the Mini Section or the Youth Section, there are two RFU courses being held at Cobham RFC in January 2013. The courses are being led by Bob Ockenden from the RFU. Bob is an expert in his field. He is highly motivational, extremely encouraging and really entertaining!
