U12 MINI RUGBY
Match Report Camberley A Festival
Runners up
The As got over their semi final hang-up (not having successfully negotiated one for quite a while) but narrowly failed to win the competitively fought Camberley festival when losing by one try to nil against old foes Sutton & Epsom in the final.
This was a much improved all round performance by the boys in terms of commitment and performance, whilst still leaving some areas for development.
In the group stages the boys came back from a slow start and 2 tries to nil down to level the score against S&E before a disputed last minute try left us on the wrong end of a 21-14 scoreline. Flying wingman Hogge benefited from some Tunnacliffe quick thinking (an oxymoron?).
Needing to beat Dorking to qualify, a baffling disallowed try for us was fortunately followed by two short distance dive overs from Messrs Harty and Anderson. 14-0 was the final score and qualified us to play the winners of the other group, Windsor.
In this semi final it really was end to end stuff. Another Hoggie try was cancelled out by a grown up crossfield kicking try by Windsor. As extra time came and went with a 7 -7 scoreline, we scraped through to the final by dint of the number of tries we had scored
We always start slowly against S&E and the final was no exception. We conceded the ball from the kick off, which led to a lineout in the corner and a dive over forwards try for S&E.
Thereafter it was hard work. Holding out until half time against the well drilled oppo’s forwards was the first aim which was successfully negotiated. After half time we spent time pounding the S&E line with one tremendous driving maul which was sadly held up. Generally we had them in the scrums but not the rucks and sadly didn’t get much in the way of running ball.
Chances were few and far between and time came and went quickly(still only 7 minutes each way).
The final whistle was greeted by Cobham disappointment but recognition that, whilst still work to do, we are in the mix with a number of other clubs at our age group.
