Cobham Under 17A
Match Report vs Camberley
December 13th 2009
Result: Camberley 7 pts Cobham 27 pts
There are occasions when a player is late for a game, but it is unusual to be late because your father has suffered a puncture on the M3 in his sparkling Maserati! (Happy Birthday Mark). After a hasty transfer to the Williams car the complete back-line was able to report for duty in a game where we mixed some good all round rugby with some poor decision making but still managed to win by 5 tries to one. In truth the pitch was best suited for Land Rovers rather than more sprightly machines and our fast lads were often held up in the sticky mud.
Cobham under 17s started the game very well and played in a very controlled manner, scoring a good first try from a simple back row move initiated by Powlson and finished by the scorching Sharpe. Then a few mistakes put us under pressure on our own line and despite some gutsy defence, Camberley broke through to take the lead.
With the game not flowing due to the pitch and no policing of the offside line, Cobham had to struggle for a while. However the line-out and scrum were always dominant and just before half-time a sweeping move saw Hughes break the line and Flynn make the scoring pass to Swindell who used his strength to score.
After half time Cobham generally had the territory and possession. After some good forwards work, Coutts was able to strong arm his way over to good effect.
Thereafter the Camberley side tired and Cobham were able to move the ball more freely with Koep to the fore. Sharpe scored the fourth try with a neat chip and chase, and rounded off the game by scoring his third and finishing off a good flowing move from the backs (our own Maserati moment), where Powlson (in his alternative position) was causing havoc.
A mixed bag of a game, but the man of the match goes to the whole front row. Thurston and Coutts got in a lot of work and lifted well, and Philip won his own ball and threw well.
Merry Christmas!
