Cobham Under 17A Match Report vs Warlingham
November 8th 2009
Result: Cobham 44 pts Warlingham 0 pts
Cobham under 17s got their league season under way with a comprehensive victory against Warlingham, who played committed rugby throughout. Eight tries and two conversions were the result of good coordinated rugby between backs and forwards and an ability to get the ball wide. Cobham had to make a few late changes to the original side but you could see in the warm up that all was ok as the lads had a spring in the step and a smile on their face (or as much of a smile as 16/17 year olds provide on a Sunday morning!)
The front five proved good ball winners. The scrum and line-out were solid with Will Hardy throwing in with a 100% record and the front row collectively winning a few against the head. Richard Philip got around the park to good effect and from a kick off a kick through and chase very nearly resulted in a try.
The back row supported well. Powlson was decisive at the back of the scrum and this created several opportunities to exploit the blind side.
The backs played strongly throughout. The interesting feature was the accuracy and timing of the passes which were good across the line. In particular Paddy Williams mixed his passing up well and ran the game to good effect. This created time for the outside backs to run, and from the first move of the match Jack Burns was able to take advantage and send the final pass to Powlson who scooted in to the corner. The centres played with freedom and good vision and Harty was always hard to stop. At scrum half Bliss had a strong game and had the benefit of a dominant scrum to thank for his hat-trick of tries (and we were all grateful for the jugs provided by Roy afterwards!)
Well done to the Cobham lads and many thanks to Warlingham for the game.
Thanks also to the support for the game including the lads who are currently injured or were unavailable for this game. Good luck to Clifford and Mays with their operations and recovery.
